Not only was Lotte Lenya twice Kurt Weill's wife, she also
interpreted many of his songs and has been protecting his work
since his death. The work of Kurt Weill (1900 - 1950) appears
to sound sometimes bizarre, sarcastic and thoughtful. In
collaboration with Berthold Brecht he established his sound and
style with „Die Dreigroschenoper“. He meets Lotte Lenya by
chance and soon was clear that both had very strong characters.
The child of Jewish ancestors emigrated first to France and
then to America to escape the German Reich. Because of the
cultural differences between French and American music, he
tried to adapt his compositional style, and it seems that he
was a musical chamelion.
This theatrical concert includes their love letters that put
the music in context. The duo's interpretations are sharp,
eccentric and heart-wrenching, while art historian Bart Jan de
Graaf guides the audience through the lives of these foolish
lovers and strong characters. If you have ever been interested
in the work of Kurt Weill, you will be rewarded with hidden
anecdotes and re-arranged works.
